Starter 23- Portrait Ideas (10 min)
Think about this tonight, because tomorrow you will be contacting them to schedule the portrait session! Interview Talk/Write We’re going to engage in a number of strategies today to get you thinking about your interviews, and to get you started writing. The first one is Talk/Write. This is designed to help you talk through different potential ways to approach the interview, then write them down.
Perspective Statements (20 min) Your next task is to develop a specific perspective about adolescence that you want to convey in your interview. This could be based on one specific part of the interview you want to highlight, a running theme that appeared, or a big “aha” moment you had about adolescence during the interview. Take 10 minutes, and write THREE possible perspective statements on a piece of paper. You could have the same idea, worded slightly differently, or you could have three different ideas you’re thinking about focusing on EXAMPLES:
Now, use the handout linked above to get critiques from the people at your table. One critique from the person sitting next to you, one from the person across from you. Shitty First Drafts Too often we get stuck in structures and organizational outlines that can stifle our narrative voices. We’re going to use a strategy to start this writing that is used by many professional writers. Read this essay by Anne LaMott. As you read:
In your table groups:

EXAMPLE: Dear _________, I am emailing you today to ask if you would allow me to interview you for a school project and take a photographic portrait of you. Our interview write-ups will be paired with a photographic portrait of the person we interviewed. I chose to interview you because…YOU FILL THIS IN This assignment would require us to meet twice. The first appointment would be for the interview, and needs to happen between Tuesday, 9/24 and Sunday, 9/29. This will take between 30-60 minutes. The second appointment would be to take your portrait, and needs to happen between Tuesday, 10/1 and Sunday, 10/7. This will take around 15-30 minutes. Please let me know if you would be willing to work with me on this assignment, and if so, what dates and times would work well for you for the interview. We could meet here at AHS during school hours (I am available FILL IN HUMANITIES HOURS HERE), or off campus after school. On pages 27, 29, and 69 Arnold (Jr), draws annotated cartoon portraits of three people that are important to him. He shows important details about their personality and their relationship through the elements he includes and his comments about those elements. For your starter, I want you to choose someone influential in your journey through adolescence, and draw a portrait of them in this same style on printer paper. Remember, it's not about your drawing skills! DofaPTI Discussion Discuss pages 55-98 Work Time: Finish BOTH of the tasks below by the start of class on TUESDAY
HOMEWORK
Starter 15- Reaction to DofPTI
Reading Time Read and annotate. Goal - page 98 by Monday (15 pages/day for the next 3 days). DofaPTI Discussion Put students in discussion groups, give them list of questions. Notes are optional, but this is a good chance to add to your annotations! Discussion should take between 15-20 minutes. Much shorter, and you’re probably not digging enough! Think of these as mini-seminars. Morality and Gender Talked about Kohlberg yesterday, now we’re going to look at a critique of Kohlberg. There are two versions of this reading.
